Introduction to MOSFET Transistors
Transistors are a class of solid-state semiconductor devices that constitute core fundamental components of the modern electronics industry. This category of devices can realize multiple key functions, including electrical signal amplification, rectification, voltage regulation, switching operation and signal modulation.
Classification of MOSFET Transistors
Based on differences in structural design and fabrication processes, transistors are typically classified into two primary categories: Bipolar Junction Transistors and Field-Effect Transistors , which differ substantially in operating mechanisms and application scenarios. BJTs use both electrons and holes as charge carriers for current conduction, and can be further categorized into NPN-type and PNP-type devices according to their respective doping configurations.
With high current gain and good operational stability, BJTs are widely used in signal amplification, power control and other related fields, and are common core components in analog circuits. In contrast, FETs conduct current through only one type of charge carrier, and are therefore classified as unipolar transistors. They can be further divided into Junction Field-Effect Transistors (JFETs) and Insulated-Gate Field-Effect Transistors (IGFETs), among which the Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor (MOSFET) is the most widely used. MOSFETs have the advantages of high input impedance, low power consumption, simple fabrication processes, and excellent compatibility with large-scale integrated manufacturing. These properties render them core components of modern digital integrated circuits, including computer central processing units (CPUs) and memory chips.
Taking the widely adopted NPN-type bipolar transistor as a representative example, the device is composed of three stacked semiconductor regions: the emitter region, the base region, and the collector region. Each of the three regions is connected to a corresponding external electrode, namely the emitter, the base, and the collector. When a weak current signal is injected into the base terminal, it can effectively modulate the amplitude of the large current passing through the collector. Via this current amplification effect, weak electrical signals can be amplified by tens to hundreds of thousands of times to realize the signal amplification function. By modulating the base current to switch between the cut-off state and the saturation state, transistors can implement electronic switching functions; this characteristic constitutes the hardware foundation for realizing 0/1 binary logic in digital circuit systems.
Specific MOSFET transistor model
The JFE2140 is a Burr-Brown™ matched-pair discrete JFET manufactured via a modern high-performance analog bipolar process, delivering performance that cannot be achieved by conventional discrete JFET technologies. The JFE2140 provides excellent noise performance across all current ranges, with a user-settable quiescent current ranging from 50 µA to 20 mA. At a bias current of 5 mA, the device achieves an input-referred noise of 0.9 nV/√Hz, delivering ultra-low noise performance together with extremely high input impedance (>1 TΩ). In addition, the JFETs are matched to within ±4 mV, guaranteeing low offset voltage and high CMRR performance in differential pair configurations. The JFE2140 is also equipped with integrated diodes connected to independent clamp nodes, which provides protection without requiring high-leakage, non-linear external diodes.
The JFE2140 can withstand a maximum drain-to-source voltage of 40 V, as well as gate-to-source and gate-to-drain voltages as low as –40 V. The device is specified for operation within the temperature range of –40°C to +125°C.
