Introduction to real-time clocks and timer chip

A Real-time clocks and timer chip is a chip capable of independent operation that tracks the current time. Its key feature is the ability to maintain power via a backup battery even when the main device is powered off, ensuring that recorded time data is not lost.

Unlike software-based timing methods that rely on the system clock within the CPU, an RTC is a standalone hardware unit. It features its own independent crystal oscillator, counting module, and storage unit, allowing it to keep time and provide accurate real-time information without requiring the main processor to remain active.

A timer is a functional unit used to measure time intervals or the duration of events. Its primary role is to measure the time elapsed from the start to the end of a specific event and to trigger designated operations at set intervals.

Specific models of real-time clocks and timer chip

The TLC3555 is a monolithic timing circuit manufactured using CMOS process. Fully compatible with CMOS, TTL, and MOS logic, this timer can operate at frequencies of 3 MHz or higher. The TLC3555 improves upon the existing TLC555 in terms of performance and functionality, offering tighter specification tolerances and additional features.

The trigger, threshold, and reset logic of the TLC3555 follow the same truth table as the TLC555. For typical operation, the RESET pin is set to a high level; alternatively, setting the RESET pin to a low level resets the trigger and forces the output low. The TLC3555 incorporates an internal pull-up resistor between the RESET pin and VDD, thereby reducing the number of passive components and saving board space.

Thanks to low propagation delays and shorter rise and fall times, the TLC3555 supports higher-frequency astable operation compared to earlier timers like the NE555 and TLC555. With a 15V supply voltage, the TLC3555 achieves a clean 3.1 MHz square wave in TI's standard astable test circuit. When configured as an oscillator with the output and input connected, the TLC3555 achieves an oscillation frequency of 7.2 MHz. High-frequency response is determined by circuit parasitics. In addition to the D package, which is pin-compatible with the TLC555, the TLC3555 is also available in the DDF package, enabling a compact implementation and reducing parasitic effects.
