Introduction to Low-side driver chip

Low-side driver chip are semiconductor driving devices specifically designed for controlling the switching between the load and power supply ground in the power drive field. They are widely used in industrial control, power management, motor drives, and consumer electronics.

The core definition of low-side driving originates from the connection topology of the load and switching transistor in a circuit: In a typical drive circuit, the power supply provides a positive voltage, the load is connected in series between the positive terminal of the power supply and the switching device, and the switching device controlled by the low-side driver chip is located between the load and system ground. By controlling the conduction and cutoff of the switching device, the on/off control of the load power supply circuit can be achieved. This topology is simpler than high-side driver design, eliminating the need for additional level shifting circuits to drive the high-voltage side switch, resulting in lower chip design difficulty and easier cost control.

Low-side driver chip functions

Functionally, Low-side driver chip primarily undertake the core functions of power amplification and level conversion. Most microcontrollers and logic chips output control signal levels with limited driving capabilities, typically only a few milliamps of output current. They cannot directly drive power switching devices such as power MOSFETs and IGBTs, let alone power loads such as motors, solenoid valves, and lighting modules. Low-side driver chips can convert weak logic control signals into large current signals sufficient to drive the gate of power switches. They also adapt to the voltage difference between the control and power terminals, ensuring that the switching devices can quickly and stably complete turn-on and turn-off switching. Currently, mainstream low-side driver chips integrate fault protection functions such as overcurrent protection, overtemperature protection, and undervoltage lockout. When a short circuit, overload, or chip operating temperature exceeds the safe range occurs, the chip will automatically shut down the output to prevent damage to the switching devices and load, significantly improving system reliability.

Specific model number of the Low-side driver chip

The UCC5714x is a single channel, high-performance, low-side gate driver capable of effectively driving MOSFET, IGBT and SiC power switches. The UCC5714x has a typical peak drive strength of 3A.

The UCC5714x provides the over current protection with the OCP pin. When the over current signal is detected on the OCP pin, the internal circuit will pull down the EN/FLT pin to report fault and force the OUT to low stage. An external pullup circuit on the EN/FLT is required during the normal operation of the driver. Pulling the EN/FLT low will disable the driver. The EN/FLT would also report the under voltage lock out (UVLO) fault on VDD and the over temperature fault. The UCC5714x provide both 8V and 12V UVLO options for SiC and IGBT applications.
