Introduction to USB Port Protection ICs
USB port protection ICs are semiconductor chips specifically designed for USB interfaces. They integrate multiple protection functions-such as overvoltage, overcurrent, and electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection-and are widely used in electronic devices equipped with USB interfaces, including smartphones, laptops, tablets, charging stations, automotive USB ports, and industrial control equipment. These ICs serve as core components ensuring the safe and stable operation of both the USB interface and the downstream host control circuitry.

The TPD4S311 is a single-chip USB Type-C port protection device that provides 20V VBUS short-circuit overvoltage protection and IEC ESD protection.
Since the release of the USB Type-C connector, numerous USB Type-C products and accessories that do not comply with USB Type-C specifications have entered the market. One example is USB Type-C Power Delivery adapters that apply 20V to the VBUS line. Another issue with USB Type-C is that the extremely close proximity of pins within the compact connector means that mechanical twisting or sliding can cause pin-to-pin shorts. This can result in a short circuit between the 20V VBUS line and the CC or SBU pins. Furthermore, due to the extremely close proximity of the pins within the Type-C connector, there is a significant risk of a short circuit between the 20V VBUS pin and the CC and SBU pins caused by debris or moisture.
These non-ideal conditions and mechanical events necessitate that the CC and SBU pins be capable of withstanding 20V, even though they normally operate at 5V or lower. By providing overvoltage protection, the TPD4S311 enables the CC and SBU pins to tolerate 20V without interfering with normal operation. The device places high-voltage FETs in series with the SBU and CC lines. When a voltage exceeding the OVP threshold is detected on these lines, the high-voltage switches open, isolating the rest of the system from the high-voltage condition present at the connector.
Finally, most systems require IEC 61000-4-2 system-level ESD protection for their external pins. The TPD4S311 integrates IEC 61000-4-2 ESD protection for the CC1, CC2, SBU1, and SBU2 pins, eliminating the need for external high-voltage TVS diodes at the connector.
