Introduction to Isolated interface ICs
Isolated interface ICs are specialized chips that integrate electrical isolation and interface communication functions. They are primarily used to solve signal transmission problems between systems with different voltage domains and potentials, while simultaneously blocking harmful electrical factors such as ground loops, surges, and common-mode interference from damaging backend circuits.
In applications such as industrial control, automotive electronics, and medical equipment, different functional modules often operate in environments with significant voltage differences. For example, a front-end sensor may operate in a high-voltage environment at the kilovolt level, while the back-end MCU can only withstand low voltages of 3.3V or 5V. If the two are directly connected, not only will the potential difference cause signal distortion, but it will also directly burn out the core control circuitry at the backend. Isolated interface ICs are designed to solve this problem. They can ensure normal signal transmission while severing the direct electrical connection between the two systems, thus protecting both communication and circuits.
The core principle of isolated interface ICs is to block DC and low-frequency AC electrical paths through an isolation medium, allowing only the target signal to be transmitted across the isolation layer in a non-electrically coupled manner.
Specific Part Numbers for Isolated interface ICs
The ISOW14x2 devices are galvanically-isolated RS-485/RS-422 transceiver s with a built-in isolated DC-DC converter, that eliminates the need for a separate isolated power supply in space constrained isolated designs. The low-emissions, isolated DC-DC converter meets CISPR 32 radiated emissions Class B standard with just two ferrite beads on a simple two-layer PCB. Additional 20 mA output current can be used to power other circuits on the board. An integrated 2 Mbps GPIO channel helps remove any additional digital isolator or optocoupler for diagnostics, LED indication or supply monitoring
