Introduction to Serial Digital Interface Integrated Circuits

Serial Digital Interface Integrated Circuits (SDI ICs) are specialized chips designed for the transmission and conversion of serial digital signals. Primarily applied in high-speed digital communication, audio-video transmission, industrial measurement and control and other fields, their core function is to enable mutual conversion between parallel digital signals and serial digital signals. They solve the inherent problems of parallel transmission, including insufficient bandwidth, limited transmission distance, weak anti-interference capability and high routing complexity, so as to ensure stable transmission of long-distance, high-rate digital signals.

Serial Digital Interface Integrating Core Functions

In terms of core functions, SDI ICs are divided into two categories: transmitter chips and receiver chips. Transmitter chips complete parallel-to-serial conversion for multiple parallel digital signals, and integrate them into high-speed serial bitstreams that meet corresponding transmission standards through encoding processing. Meanwhile, they perform clock embedding, signal pre-emphasis and other processing to compensate for signal attenuation occurring during long-distance transmission. Receiver chips carry out the reverse process: they conduct clock and data recovery and serial-to-parallel conversion on the received high-speed serial bitstream to restore the original multiple parallel digital signals. In addition, they support equalization, jitter removal and signal error correction to guarantee the integrity and accuracy of the restored signals.

Technical Characteristics of Serial Digital Interface Integration

In terms of technical characteristics, the core advantages of these chips are reflected in three aspects: First, high transmission rate. The transmission rate supported by current mainstream products has increased from hundreds of Mbps to 12Gbps or even higher, which can meet the transmission requirements of large-bandwidth data such as 4K and 8K ultra-high-definition audio and video. Second, strong anti-interference capability. Serial transmission only requires a small number of differential signal lines to operate, which reduces signal crosstalk compared with multi-channel parallel transmission. Combined with the differential transmission mechanism, it can suppress common-mode noise during long-distance transmission, and is suitable for complex application environments such as industrial sites and long-distance wiring. Third, high integration and low wiring cost. Traditional parallel transmission requires dozens of signal lines, while serial transmission only requires one pair or several pairs of differential lines to complete transmission, which greatly reduces the routing complexity of circuit boards and the cost of connecting cables.

In terms of application fields, SDI ICs are core foundational chips for multiple industries. In the broadcasting and television field, they are core components of SDI video transmission systems, and are widely used in professional broadcasting and television equipment such as cameras, video switchers, monitors and live streaming encoders, supporting real-time transmission of uncompressed high-definition video. In the industrial control field, these chips are used in industrial buses, high-speed image acquisition and remote measurement and control systems to realize stable high-speed data interaction between industrial equipment. In the field of medical electronics, they support high-speed image signal transmission for medical imaging equipment such as endoscopes and ultrasound diagnostic devices, meeting the strict requirements of medical scenarios for signal transmission stability and low latency. In the field of communication equipment, SDI ICs are also used in backplane interconnection, base station signal processing and other scenarios to realize high-speed data interaction between boards and between chips.
